three mirrors reflect the way i learn english
after i came back from the "21st century-ericsson cup"7th national english speaking competition with the award of the "most promising speaker", people kept asking me the same question over and over again. "how did you learn english, especially as a non-english major?" actually i believe that a hundred people would have a hundred of ways to learn english well. however, i would like to share my personal e_perience of english learning with those who have the enthusiasm for improve their english. since i have set up three mirrors in my prepared speech in hoping that they would guide our young generation on the way to globalization, i would like to maintain three mirrors here to reflect how i learned english.
the first mirror, i assume, should reflect a steady foundation. this involves my first few years of english learning, which i consider as the key factor of all my achievements in the years to follow. at that time i entered the middle school attached to _i’an jiaoton university, i could only say my abcs while others in my class could at least communicate in simple english. all the tales about the frightfulness of learning english then popped up in my mind and made me feel scared. fortunately my first english teacher was very e_perienced in enlightening her students on english learning. she was a kind woman with a charming smile. but her homework assignments were not easy task: they required us to read after the tape for 20 times and recite the whole te_t. so it was quite natural that most of my classmates only recited the short essay within a short time and then went to play. but my fear of not being able to say a single word, made me sit down and immerse myself in what the teacher had asked me to do.
before every english class we would have an on duty report to let the students say something according to what they had learned .my first presentation in class was to recite a dialogue. but to my great surprise, my teacher praised me for my pronunciation. i tittered because i had imitated the readers in the tape for at least 20 times until finally i couldn’t find any differences between our pronunciations. and i did not realize that this little prize given by my teacher began to influence my english learning magically.
i believe the first three years of english learning guaranteed the possibility of my further achievements because by means of imitation i built a foundation of good pronunciation and by means of reciting i restored the basic element of english language. on the whole, i would like to show my sincere thanks to my first english teachers. yu zhiling, who is now still caring for my growth.
the second mirror i would like to mention here reflects an effective way of english learning. i still stick to my point of view that different people have different techniques to learn english well. but there are some methods that seem to be obviously ineffective.
let’s first have a look at the four important skills for students to master: reading, writing, listening and speaking. i have placed them in order of difficulty.
reading is the easiest skill. it is also the most widely found english language skill amongst chinese student, writing is a more active skill than reading. however it is still a little easier than speaking, as there is plenty of time to choose the right words look in the dictionary for help, and make corrections. listening is the third most important language skill to learn. it is far more difficult to listen and understand spoken english than to read english in a book or in a letter. speaking english may be the most difficult of the four language skills. it is an active skill, and requires the student to put words together into sentences without much time to prepare, and with no time for correction, yet it is the most e_citing skill to have, as it opens up wonderful channels of communication with people of others cultures and countries. but this is just what we lack.
more often than not i found some of the students who get high marks in their e_ams showed an inability to communicate with people in english. and this enabled me to understand deeper what my first english teacher has always emphasized: listening and speaking keeping ahead; reading and writing following up. i believe this is the rule of learning a language because we learn a certain language to communicate. as we conquered the most difficult parts: listening and speaking, we would easily master the writing and reading skills.
then how can we make it? i have seen lots of diligent students in the early morning reading aloud their english te_ts without paying any attention to their nearly unacceptable pronunciation. i feel sorry for those students because their hard work deserves a much better english level if they improve their method of learning.
i found that my way of learning english that i formed from middle school still works today. by listening to tapes and imitating the speakers one can improve his pronunciation within a short time. by reciting classic essays one can enrich their language as well as enlarge their vocabulary. as a non-english major, i like to set aside a certain period of time for english learning everyday, usually an hour or at least half an hour. i utilize this precious time by listening to tapes and imitating their content and then reciting the short passages i like. to be frank, "crazy english" has always been my favorite. this is definitely not intended to flatter. instead of dividing my attention between too many materials, i’d rather concentrate on one particular resource at a time such as ce, not only because of its abundant content and native english, but also because of the benefits it has brought to me through intensive reading, listening and reciting, i believe that studying english by using these intensive methods will help you to get twice the result with half the effort.
last but not least, the third mirror reflects the interest in english learning. confucius once said, "knowing it is not as delighting in it." nowhere is this more true than on the matter of english learning. my e_perience in english learning initiated quite passively, but before long my interest in it began to inspire me to continue the process. to testify my english skills and to stir up even greater enthusiasm, i used to participate in various kinds of competitions. when i was preparing for a nation-wide english competition in high school, i got to know the "21st century cup" english speaking competition for the first time as i used their scripts as my preparing materials. i envied those contestants in the "21st century cup" very much. their english skills and their quick response made me feel swooning. although i did not get a good rank in the nation wide competition for high school students, i had begun my wildest dream of participating in the 21st century cup. even after i became an engineering student i still held onto my dream, that it would come true some day. because i can always find something new to challenge me, and set up those challenges as my goals to achieve, i never find english learning a dull job. i believe i will forever cherish the glorious moment when i was on the stage of the "21st century-ericsson cup" 7th national english speaking competition, and my wonderful memories there without any doubt will add passion to my english learning in the days to come.
since the theme of this year’s competition was "globalization", we have enjoyed various visions from contestants on thinking of what we young people should do to meet the challenges and the opportunities posed by globalization. but there’s one thing for sure: good english and communication skills are the gateway to the world arena. i hope some of man and woman in china who have conquered english to hold hands together to build up the bridge between china and the rest of the world with the world’s most widely used language!

victor hugo once said: the cause is noble flower, and fruit is sweet cause, let us do the cause of the leaves, because the cause of the industry is e_traordinary and humble, teachers silently as the green leaves that, when the moment carved frame of the beautiful flowers.
today i also had the honor of doing the cause of the leaf, but i was still young leaves, when i set foot on this land, i hesitate, i can do please? but when i saw a senior education, i can be very proud to tell you that i have no regrets today is who leaves this determination to do so is she, an ordinary teacher, a bit ordinary private kindergarten teachers - teachers twenty years ago since she labeled as "child king" crown, it is destined to accompany her with the ordinary, there is no substantial income, no enjoyment of lu_ury, there are only busy life and shoulder heavy responsibilities, in this e_traordinary early childhood education position, has spent more than two dozen spring and autumn annals, he no regrets, she "does not obliterate the heart of love," as a motto to inspire, and remind ourselves to constantly improve themselves.
20 years ago, a woman, in the absence of any conditions with the help of a man propped up this banner, what she has insisted this is love, love of children is a love of education, for many years, her rain or shine, as she said, so the teacher, i e_traordinary, and so the teacher, i am rich, and so the teacher, i am happy, and so the teacher, i have no reason to regret this life.

i asked her when a teacher what is most needed? she answered without hesitation: "love", teachers are the implication of a love and dedication, the hearts of teachers, teachers of the situation should be like a rain shower flower leaves, and only in the growth of love in their hearts to their children is pure and beautiful of.
her children were very small age, poor self-care and will not wear , _u things which are silently every day for her children were doing, i remember on one occasion, a child was accidentally nails poked feet, from a thick, she mouth to suction out the child, children trousers pulled the stool, she took the children to take home for the cautious good clothes. encounter these things, she always said no, and their children are.
2002 to december 19 of a mother is the most cruel day, this day, her son, only 24 years old, was diagnosed with advanced liver cancer, the teacher leaves the face of this news, the really faint passed you can not, ah, his children a few days ago it was good, how can god do that to a kind-hearted mother, ah, when all the others have insisted that the mother could not, she died of illness in children after less than a week has returned to the classroom, the children returned to the side, what is it? what is a mother will allow us to do this, is love, he said, these points are not her darling baby, are her most beloved child. everyone says: teachers is too ordinary, and yes, teachers are e_traordinary, but the cause is great, because they are quietly engaged in the cause of the dedication and selfless sacrifice.

mr. president, mr. speaker, members of the 77th congress:
i address you, the members of this new congress, at a moment unprecedented in the history of the union. i use the word "unprecedented" because at no previous time has american security been as seriously threatened from without as it is today.
since the permanent formation of our government under the constitution in 1789, most of the periods of crisis in our history have related to our domestic affairs. and, fortunately, only one of these -- the four-year war between the states -- ever threatened our national unity. today, thank god, 130,000,000 americans in 48 states have forgotten points of the compass in our national unity.
it is true that prior to 1914 the united states often has been disturbed by events in other continents. we have even engaged in two wars with european nations and in a number of undeclared wars in the west indies, in the mediterranean and in the pacific, for the maintenance of american rights and for the principles of peaceful commerce. but in no case had a serious threat been raised against our national safety or our continued independence.
what i seek to convey is the historic truth that the united states as a nation has at all times maintained opposition -- clear, definite opposition -- to any attempt to lock us in behind an ancient chinese wall while the procession of civilization went past. today, thinking of our children and of their children, we oppose enforced isolation for ourselves or for any other part of the americas.
that determination of ours, e_tending over all these years, was proved, for e_ample, in the early days during the quarter century of wars following the french revolution. while the napoleonic struggles did threaten interests of the united states because of the french foothold in the west indies and in louisiana, and while we engaged in the war of 1812 to vindicate our right to peaceful trade, it is nevertheless clear that neither france nor great britain nor any other nation was aiming at domination of the whole world.
and in like fashion, from 1815 to 1914 -- ninety-nine years -- no single war in europe or in asia constituted a real threat against our future or against the future of any other american nation.
e_cept in the ma_imilian interlude in me_ico, no foreign power sought to establish itself in this hemisphere. and the strength of the british fleet in the atlantic has been a friendly strength; it is still a friendly strength.
even when the world war broke out in 1914, it seemed to contain only small threat of danger to our own american future. but as time went on, as we remember, the american people began to visualize what the downfall of democratic nations might mean to our own democracy.
we need not overemphasize imperfections in the peace of versailles. we need not harp on failure of the democracies to deal with problems of world reconstruction. we should remember that the peace of 1919 was far less unjust than the kind of pacification which began even before munich, and which is being carried on under the new order of tyranny that seeks to spread over every continent today. the american people have unalterably set their faces against that tyranny.
i suppose that every realist knows that the democratic way of life is at this moment being directly assailed in every part of the world -- assailed either by arms or by secret spreading of poisonous propaganda by those who seek to destroy unity and promote discord in nations that are still at peace. during 16 long months this assault has blotted out the whole pattern of democratic life in an appalling number of independent nations, great and small. and the assailants are still on the march, threatening other nations, great and small.
therefore, as your president, performing my constitutional duty to "give to the congress information of the state of the union," i find it unhappily necessary to report that the future and the safety of our country and of our democracy are overwhelmingly involved in events far beyond our borders.
armed defense of democratic e_istence is now being gallantly waged in four continents. if that defense fails, all the population and all the resources of europe and asia, and africa and austral-asia will be dominated by conquerors. and let us remember that the total of those populations in those four continents, the total of those populations and their resources greatly e_ceed the sum total of the population and the resources of the whole of the western hemisphere -- yes, many times over.
in times like these it is immature -- and, incidentally, untrue -- for anybody to brag that an unprepared america, single-handed and with one hand tied behind its back, can hold off the whole world.
no realistic american can e_pect from a dictator’s peace international generosity, or return of true independence, or world disarmament, or freedom of e_pression, or freedom of religion -- or even good business. such a peace would bring no security for us or for our neighbors. those who would give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety.
as a nation we may take pride in the fact that we are soft-hearted; but we cannot afford to be soft-headed. we must always be wary of those who with sounding brass and a tinkling cymbal preach the "ism" of appeasement. we must especially beware of that small group of selfish men who would clip the wings of the american eagle in order to feather their own nests.
i have recently pointed out how quickly the tempo of modern warfare could bring into our very midst the physical attack which we must eventually e_pect if the dictator nations win this war.
there is much loose talk of our immunity from immediate and direct invasion from across the seas. obviously, as long as the british navy retains its power, no such danger e_ists. even if there were no british navy, it is not probable that any enemy would be stupid enough to attack us by landing troops in the united states from across thousands of miles of ocean, until it had acquired strategic bases from which to operate.
but we learn much from the lessons of the past years in europe -- particularly the lesson of norway, whose essential seaports were captured by treachery and surprise built up over a series of years. the first phase of the invasion of this hemisphere would not be the landing of regular troops. the necessary strategic points would be occupied by secret agents and by their dupes -- and great numbers of them are already here and in latin america. as long as the aggressor nations maintain the offensive they, not we, will choose the time and the place and the method of their attack.
and that is why the future of all the american republics is today in serious danger. that is why this annual message to the congress is unique in our history. that is why every member of the e_ecutive branch of the government and every member of the congress face great responsibility, great accountability. the need of the moment is that our actions and our policy should be devoted primarily -- almost e_clusively -- to meeting this foreign peril. for all our domestic problems are now a part of the great emergency.
just as our national policy in internal affairs has been based upon a decent respect for the rights and the dignity of all our fellow men within our gates, so our national policy in foreign affairs has been based on a decent respect for the rights and the dignity of all nations, large and small. and the justice of morality must and will win in the end.
our national policy is this:
first, by an impressive e_pression of the public will and without regard to partisanship, we are committed to all-inclusive national defense.
secondly, by an impressive e_pression of the public will and without regard to partisanship, we are committed to full support of all those resolute people everywhere who are resisting aggression and are thereby keeping war away from our hemisphere. by this support we e_press our determination that the democratic cause shall prevail, and we strengthen the defense and the security of our own nation.
third, by an impressive e_pression of the public will and without regard to partisanship, we are committed to the proposition that principles of morality and considerations for our own security will never permit us to acquiesce in a peace dictated by aggressors and sponsored by appeasers. we know that enduring peace cannot be bought at the cost of other people"s freedom.
in the recent national election there was no substantial difference between the two great parties in respect to that national policy. no issue was fought out on this line before the american electorate. and today it is abundantly evident that american citizens everywhere are demanding and supporting speedy and complete action in recognition of obvious danger.
therefore, the immediate need is a swift and driving increase in our armament production. leaders of industry and labor have responded to our summons. goals of speed have been set. in some cases these goals are being reached ahead of time. in some cases we are on schedule; in other cases there are slight but not serious delays. and in some cases -- and, i am sorry to say, very important cases -- we are all concerned by the slowness of the accomplishment of our plans.
the army and navy, however, have made substantial progress during the past year. actual e_perience is improving and speeding up our methods of production with every passing day. and today"s best is not good enough for tomorrow.
i am not satisfied with the progress thus far made. the men in charge of the program represent the best in training, in ability, and in patriotism. they are not satisfied with the progress thus far made. none of us will be satisfied until the job is done.
no matter whether the original goal was set too high or too low, our objective is quicker and better results.
to give you two illustrations:
we are behind schedule in turning out finished airplanes. we are working day and night to solve the innumerable problems and to catch up.
we are ahead of schedule in building warships, but we are working to get even further ahead of that schedule.
to change a whole nation from a basis of peacetime production of implements of peace to a basis of wartime production of implements of war is no small task. and the greatest difficulty comes at the beginning of the program, when new tools, new plant facilities, new assembly lines, new shipways must first be constructed before the actual material begins to flow steadily and speedily from them.
the congress of course, must rightly keep itself informed at all times of the progress of the program. however, there is certain information, as the congress itself will readily recognize, which, in the interests of our own security and those of the nations that we are supporting, must of needs be kept in confidence.
new circumstances are constantly begetting new needs for our safety. i shall ask this congress for greatly increased new appropriations and authorizations to carry on what we have begun.
i also ask this congress for authority and for funds sufficient to manufacture additional munitions and war supplies of many kinds, to be turned over to those nations which are now in actual war with aggressor nations. our most useful and immediate role is to act as an arsenal for them as well as for ourselves. they do not need manpower, but they do need billions of dollars’ worth of the weapons of defense.
the time is near when they will not be able to pay for them all in ready cash. we cannot, and we will not, tell them that they must surrender merely because of present inability to pay for the weapons which we know they must have.
i do not recommend that we make them a loan of dollars with which to pay for these weapons -- a loan to be repaid in dollars. i recommend that we make it possible for those nations to continue to obtain war materials in the united states, fitting their orders into our own program. and nearly all of their material would, if the time ever came, be useful in our own defense.
taking counsel of e_pert military and naval authorities, considering what is best for our own security, we are free to decide how much should be kept here and how much should be sent abroad to our friends who, by their determined and heroic resistance, are giving us time in which to make ready our own defense.
for what we send abroad we shall be repaid, repaid within a reasonable time following the close of hostilities, repaid in similar materials, or at our option in other goods of many kinds which they can produce and which we need.
let us say to the democracies: "we americans are vitally concerned in your defense of freedom. we are putting forth our energies, our resources, and our organizing powers to give you the strength to regain and maintain a free world. we shall send you in ever-increasing numbers, ships, planes, tanks, guns. that is our purpose and our pledge."
in fulfillment of this purpose we will not be intimidated by the threats of dictators that they will regard as a breach of international law or as an act of war our aid to the democracies which dare to resist their aggression. such aid -- such aid is not an act of war, even if a dictator should unilaterally proclaim it so to be.
and when the dictators -- if the dictators -- are ready to make war upon us, they will not wait for an act of war on our part.
they did not wait for norway or belgium or the netherlands to commit an act of war. their only interest is in a new one-way international law, which lacks mutuality in its observance and therefore becomes an instrument of oppression. the happiness of future generations of americans may well depend on how effective and how immediate we can make our aid felt. no one can tell the e_act character of the emergency situations that we may be called upon to meet. the nation"s hands must not be tied when the nation"s life is in danger.
yes, and we must prepare, all of us prepare, to make the sacrifices that the emergency -- almost as serious as war itself -- demands. whatever stands in the way of speed and efficiency in defense, in defense preparations of any kind, must give way to the national need.
a free nation has the right to e_pect full cooperation from all groups. a free nation has the right to look to the leaders of business, of labor, and of agriculture to take the lead in stimulating effort, not among other groups but within their own group.
the best way of dealing with the few slackers or trouble-makers in our midst is, first, to shame them by patriotic e_ample, and if that fails, to use the sovereignty of government to save government.
as men do not live by bread alone, they do not fight by armaments alone. those who man our defenses and those behind them who build our defenses must have the stamina and the courage which come from unshakable belief in the manner of life which they are defending. the mighty action that we are calling for cannot be based on a disregard of all the things worth fighting for.
the nation takes great satisfaction and much strength from the things which have been done to make its people conscious of their individual stake in the preservation of democratic life in america. those things have toughened the fiber of our people, have renewed their faith and strengthened their devotion to the institutions we make ready to protect.
certainly this is no time for any of us to stop thinking about the social and economic problems which are the root cause of the social revolution which is today a supreme factor in the world. for there is nothing mysterious about the foundations of a healthy and strong democracy.
the basic things e_pected by our people of their political and economic systems are simple. they are:
equality of opportunity for youth and for others.
jobs for those who can work.
security for those who need it.
the ending of special privilege for the few.
the preservation of civil liberties for all.
the enjoyment -- the enjoyment of the fruits of scientific progress in a wider and constantly rising standard of living.
these are the simple, the basic things that must never be lost sight of in the turmoil and unbelievable comple_ity of our modern world. the inner and abiding strength of our economic and political systems is dependent upon the degree to which they fulfill these e_pectations.
many subjects connected with our social economy call for immediate improvement. as e_amples:
we should bring more citizens under the coverage of old-age pensions and unemployment insurance.
we should widen the opportunities for adequate medical care.
we should plan a better system by which persons deserving or needing gainful employment may obtain it.
i have called for personal sacrifice, and i am assured of the willingness of almost all americans to respond to that call. a part of the sacrifice means the payment of more money in ta_es. in my budget message i will recommend that a greater portion of this great defense program be paid for from ta_ation than we are paying for today. no person should try, or be allowed to get rich out of the program, and the principle of ta_ payments in accordance with ability to pay should be constantly before our eyes to guide our legislation.
if the congress maintains these principles the voters, putting patriotism ahead pocketbooks, will give you their applause.
in the future days, which we seek to make secure, we look forward to a world founded upon four essential human freedoms.
the first is freedom of speech and e_pression -- everywhere in the world.
the second is freedom of every person to worship god in his own way -- everywhere in the world.
the third is freedom from want, which, translated into world terms, means economic understandings which will secure to every nation a healthy peacetime life for its inhabitants -- everywhere in the world.
the fourth is freedom from fear, which, translated into world terms, means a world-wide reduction of armaments to such a point and in such a thorough fashion that no nation will be in a position to commit an act of physical aggression against any neighbor -- anywhere in the world.
that is no vision of a distant millennium. it is a definite basis for a kind of world attainable in our own time and generation. that kind of world is the very antithesis of the so-called "new order" of tyranny which the dictators seek to create with the crash of a bomb.
to that new order we oppose the greater conception -- the moral order. a good society is able to face schemes of world domination and foreign revolutions alike without fear.
since the beginning of our american history we have been engaged in change, in a perpetual, peaceful revolution, a revolution which goes on steadily, quietly, adjusting itself to changing conditions without the concentration camp or the quicklime in the ditch. the world order which we seek is the cooperation of free countries, working together in a friendly, civilized society.
this nation has placed its destiny in the hands and heads and hearts of its millions of free men and women, and its faith in freedom under the guidance of god. freedom means the supremacy of human rights everywhere. our support goes to those who struggle to gain those rights and keep them. our strength is our unity of purpose.
to that high concept there can be no end save victory.

good morning, dear teacher and my friends.
it’s a very intresting topic today.
i think my dad was a hero for me when i was a young child. we"d go fishing, walks, and other fun things for a kid.
every child has a good and great father, and so do i. my dad played a very important role in my daily life`````e_actly speaking, in my past 16 years.
my father always stands in the center of my life, from past till now and possibly in the future.
my family was rather poor when i was in my childhood. we didn"t have our own house and had to live in a shabby, small room rented from my father"s factory. the room was so small that there was little space for people to walk. i didn"t have my own bed and had to sleep with my parents. this is terrible both for my parents and me.
but father made this all different!he works very hard on his own business, now we have our own 2 housese, surly,i have my own room.and he take our family so much happiness, richer and richer.
when i was little, i did everything with my dad. you could always find me sitting on his knee or walking and doing everything with him. every night he would read me a bed time story and make the voices of each character.
i learnt a lot from my daddy. i learnt to never take things to seriously and to always smile.
like many other fathers, my dad and i also has generation gap. he is not good at or even can’t work the computer. so when i sitting at the computer desk,he will say something like ‘you should pay more attention to your study’, ‘don’t waste time on the computer games’ , ‘it will be bad for your eyes’ and so on. how can i- a computer fan – reduce time on computer? so i continue studying and playing on it
years pasted, my father is over 45 now. it is time for me to look after him and i am sure i will do and we will live an even better life. and i will say,i really love you dad, cause you are the hero in my mind.
thank you so much!

change
leo tolstoy once said, everyone thinks of changing the world, but no one thinks of changing himself.
he is right. we always have great plans and dreams in our minds… too ready to achieve something grand that changes the world or benefits all of mankind .for e_ample; we hate pollution and have made up our minds to find new energy sources that keep the environment clean. yet we still litter on the ground. we complain about traffic jams, so we plan to build more highways to solve the problem, but it never occurs to us that our failure to follow traffic regulations is the leading cause of this situation. we are so concerned that the violence in the media has a bad impact on our children, we urge the government to set laws to protect them. but, do we, as adults, set a good e_ample for our kids? we use nasty words and even spit on the ground in front of them, i dare to say, we harm more!
in my opinion, before we decide to change the world, we had better change ourselves first. as ordinary individuals, we do not have the power to change the world. but we can change our habit of littering, spitting, cussing, we can respect the environment around us, we must act as good models for our kids.
if each of us does all of these little things, all of us, millions and millions of individuals together, together we will be strong …strong enough to change our world!
so please, the ne_t time you do something, think how your actions influence not only you, but those around you too, especially our children …and perhaps more importantly…our planet!

east and west have met
runner-up: rui cheng gang, foreign affair college
honorable judges, ladies and gentlemen:
kipling said:" east is east, and west is west, and never the twain shall meet!" but now, a century later, they have met.
they have met in business. they have met in education. they have met in the arts.
some would argue that these meetings leave us with a choice between east and west ,but i believe the best future lies in the creative combination of both worlds. we can make western ideas, customs and technology our own, and adapt them to our own use. we can enjoy the best of all worlds, because our tradition is, above all, one of selecting the best and making it our own.
but, do western styles and values threaten our identity?
history makes it easy for us to think so-perhaps too easy.
some people seem to think that adopting western customs, such as a bride wearing white-which has long been a color of mourning in china, instead of the traditional chinese red for her wedding, is another submission to foreign intervention,--a betrayal of our heritage, they say.
they fear that as we become "globalized", we will no longer be chinese.
i do not agree.
history teachers that a strong and confident nation is at ease in hearing from the outside world.
the wedding of eastern and western cultures, whether in white gowns or red, brings us variety.
it is a rich banquet of special foods from all over the world.
as an amateur gourmet of chinese cuisine, our superb flavours delight me.
but my chinese taste appreciates food from any land.
i even allow the convenience of mcdonald"s a place in my life without giving up my good taste.
my grandfather taught me to hum tunes of beijing opera from the time i was very young; they are deep in my spirit, part of my soul.
i love beijing opera, because it always reminds me of who i am.
but i am also a fan of modern pop music, the no.1 fan of spice girls on campus.
of course, it goes far beyond food, music and dance. it goes into values and ways of thinking about the world.
once upon a time, or so my teacher told me, a chinese boy and an american girl had a squabble.
both wanted to keep a bunny rabbit they had found in the garden.
surely you"ve seen a rabbit sunning himself in the grass.
nothing is more lovable, nothing more natural. no wonder they wanted him.
the chinese boy played his er-hu. happiness and joy, longing and passion, filled the air. the little rabbit swayed gently and began to move his ears in the direction of the music. he liked what he heard.
the girl then took out her violin and played it to produce beautiful melodies of her own.
the rabbit began to bounce in her direction.
so intent were the children on their own music that neither paid the other any attention.
the competing melodies confused the little rabbit and he did not know which way to turn .unable to attract the little creature, both children gave up ;they walked away, in different directions, leaving the rabbit. . .alone.
but, what if they listened ,what if they really heard each other"s music, instead of always playing their own tunes?
when i hear the music of a violin ,rich with the joys of men and women who came together and sang and danced.. . i hear echoes of the music of the grass lands, of the hills, of the rivers...of my own native land.
is music mine and yours, or is it ours?
what i want to hear is the er-hu and the violin played together, in rhythm and in tune. together, we can produce new and beautiful music, rich with te_tures and sounds that can only be made in harmony.
the rabbit sits in the grass in the ever-warming sun. waiting for us to play, waiting for the symphony to begin.
will he have to wait forever? the choice is ours . thank you.

pick up a calculator and consecutively enter the numbers of your birthday.
add 754.
subtract 753.
add 1.
now, divide this number by yesterday"s date and add 59 to the total.
subtract 59.
add the number of fingers on your right hand.
subtract the number of toes on your left foot.
divide this by any number between one and ten.
is the number you came up with your age? no? dang. oh well. it didn"t work for me either but if it had it would have been pretty cool, wouldn"t it?

do you think it"s possible to control someone"s attention? even more than that, what about predicting human behavior? i think those are interesting ideas, if you could. i mean, for me, that would be the perfect superpower, actually kind of an evil way of approaching it. but for myself, in the past, i"ve spent the last 20 years studying human behavior from a rather unorthodo_ way: picking pockets. when we think of misdirection, we think of something as looking off to the side, when actually it"s often the things that are right in front of us that are the hardest things to see, the things that you look at every day that you"re blinded to.
for e_ample, how many of you still have your cell phones on you right now? great. double-check. make sure you still have them on you. i was doing some shopping beforehand. now you"ve looked at them probably a few times today, but i"m going to ask you a question about them. without looking at your cell phone directly yet, can you remember the icon in the bottom right corner? bring them out, check, and see how accurate you were. how"d you do? show of hands. did we get it?
now that you"re done looking at those, close them down, because every phone has something in common. no matter how you organize the icons, you still have a clock on the front. so, without looking at your phone, what time was it? you just looked at your clock, right? it"s an interesting idea. now, i"ll ask you to take that a step further with a game of trust. close your eyes. i realize i"m asking you to do that while you just heard there"s a pickpocket in the room, but close your eyes.
now, you"ve been watching me for about 30 seconds. with your eyes closed, what am i wearing? make your best guess. what color is my shirt? what color is my tie? now open your eyes. by a show of hands, were you right?
it"s interesting, isn"t it? some of us are a little bit more perceptive than others. it seems that way. but i have a different theory about that, that model of attention. they have fancy models of attention, posner"s trinity model of attention. for me, i like to think of it very simple, like a surveillance system. it"s kind of like you have all these fancy sensors, and inside your brain is a little security guard. for me, i like to call him frank. so frank is sitting at a desk. he"s got all sorts of cool information in front of him, high-tech equipment, he"s got cameras, he"s got a little phone that he can pick up, listen to the ears, all these senses, all these perceptions. but attention is what steers your perceptions, is what controls your reality. it"s the gateway to the mind. if you don"t attend to something, you can"t be aware of it. but ironically, you can attend to something without being aware of it. that"s why there"s the cocktail effect: when you"re in a party, you"re having conversations with someone, and yet you can recognize your name and you didn"t even realize you were listening to that.
now, for my job, i have to play with techniques to e_ploit this, to play with your attention as a limited resource. so if i could control how you spend your attention, if i could maybe steal your attention through a distraction. now, instead of doing it like misdirection and throwing it off to the side, instead, what i choose to focus on is frank, to be able to play with the frank inside your head, your little security guard, and get you, instead of focusing on your e_ternal senses, just to go internal for a second. so if i ask you to access a memory, like, what is that? what just happened? do you have a wallet? do you have an american e_press in your wallet? and when i do that, your frank turns around. he accesses the file. he has to rewind the tape. and what"s interesting is, he can"t rewind the tape at the same time that he"s trying to process new data.
now, i mean, this sounds like a good theory, but i could talk for a long time and tell you lots of things, and they may be true, a portion of them, but i think it"s better if i tried to show that to you here live. so if i come down, i"m going to do a little bit of shopping. just hold still where you are.
hello, how are you? it"s lovely to see you. you did a wonderful job onstage. you have a lovely watch that doesn"t come off very well. do you have your ring as well? good. just taking inventory. you"re like a buffet. it"s hard to tell where to start, there"s so many great things.
hi, how are you? good to see you.
hi, sir, could you stand up for me, please? just right where you are. oh, you"re married. you follow directions well. that"s nice to meet you, sir. you don"t have a whole lot inside your pockets. anything down by the pocket over here? hopefully so. have a seat. there you go. you"re doing well.

ladies and gentlemen,
for lives in schoolyards, i think:that"s the studying place we"re most familiar with。some people say:studying is the very and most boring thing, and i have even include the life in school。but i think studying is a very joyous thing, life in school is very interesting,it forms a picture of life, made my road of life be filled with happiness and enrichment。my life in school is like a slowly flowing stream,it flows happily, with occasions of small waves。lift your head up, it"s spring, bow your head down, it"s fall, the full moon as a picture, the crescent as a poem。my life in school lived in the silence of time.
it"s morning, with the cool winds accompanying me,small groups of students arrived at class。in the morning reading class, everyone opened up their books, together they read the te_tbook entries aloud, sometimes their would be some students that does not read aloud, but under the teachers governance, everyone all read aloud,it became a unmissable schoolyard orchestra in the schoolyard。a bran new day at school just begun。 every-time we saw the teacher"s professional figure, our hearts would go with the teacher into the sea of knowledge,to feel the traditions of other countries,to feel the fresh sunshine in another world、the feel the world"s brightness。
breaks are rela_ing,in the hallways, some students are talking, some students are looking at the sceneries,rela_ing their weary minds。in the classrooms, some students are reading story books, some students are doing homework, and some students are making preparation for ne_t class……
the favorite class of students would be physical education。in physical education, they can run freely, enjoying the sun"s shines, making themselves sweaty。see, the students are playing basketball over on that field, they are playing badminton, and they are playing ping-pong in the court on the east side of the area......
near dawn, students all an_ious to get home with their te_tbooks,they talk and laugh, feeling happy for another joyful day。
my life in school is very sweet。because in there there are familiar faces;sweet laughters;sentences wishing me good luck。in our days of succession,we scream for joy,we share the goodness of succession;make music using notes that touch our hearts。in our days of failure,we courage each other on,work together。at the same time,i want to thank my teachers,“the end of the sky and earth can be broken, but only the heart for the teacher cannot be forgotten。”every time that i was down, sad because of the failed test,my teacher would be like a bright light guiding my lost soul, teaching me、allowing me to be a strong man, because succession only belongs to the leaders of life。
life in the schoolyard is very tensing, busy, and hard-working, but it"s also very sweetening, joyous, and colorful. i love my life in this school.

picture this: it"s monday morning, you"re at the office, you"re settling in for the day at work, and this guy that you sort of recognize from down the hall, walks right into your cubicle and he steals your chair. doesn"t say a word — just rolls away with it. doesn"t give you any information about why he took your chair out of all the other chairs that are out there.
doesn"t acknowledge the fact that you might need your chair to get some work done today. you wouldn"t stand for it. you"d make a stink. you"d follow that guy back to his cubicle and you"d say, "why my chair?"
okay, so now it"s tuesday morning and you"re at the office, and a meeting invitation pops up in your calendar. (laughter) and it"s from this woman who you kind of know from down the hall, and the subject line references some project that you heard a little bit about. but there"s no agenda. there"s no information about why you were invited to the meeting.
and yet you accept the meeting invitation, and you go. and when this highly unproductive session is over, you go back to your desk, and you stand at your desk and you say,"boy, i wish i had those two hours back, like i wish i had my chair back." (laughter)
every day, we allow our coworkers, who are otherwise very, very nice people, to steal from us. and i"m talking about something far more valuable than office furniture. i"m talking about time. your time. in fact, i believe that we are in the middle of a global epidemic of a terrible new illness known as mas: mindless accept syndrome.
the primary symptom of mindless accept syndrome is just accepting a meeting invitation the minute it pops up in your calendar. (laughter) it"s an involuntary refle_ — ding, click, bing — it"s in your calendar, "gotta go, i"m already late for a meeting."
meetings are important, right? and collaboration is key to the success of any enterprise. and a well-run meeting can yield really positive, actionable results. but between globalization and pervasive information technology, the way that we work has really changed dramatically over the last few years. and we"re miserable. (laughter) and we"re miserable not because the other guy can"t run a good meeting, it"s because of mas, our mindless accept syndrome, which is a self-inflicted wound.
actually, i have evidence to prove that mas is a global epidemic. let me tell you why. a couple of years ago, i put a video on youtube, and in the video, i acted out every terrible conference call you"ve ever been on. it goes on for about five minutes, and it has all the things that we hate about really bad meetings. there"s the moderator who has no idea how to run the meeting. there are the participants who have no idea why they"re there.
the whole thing kind of collapses into this collaborative train wreck. and everybody leaves very angry.it"s kind of funny. let"s take a quick look. (video) our goal today is to come to an agreement on a very important proposal. as a group, we need to decide if — bloop bloop — hi, who just joined? hi, it"s joe. i"m working from home today.
hi, joe. thanks for joining us today, great. i was just saying, we have a lot of people on the call we"d like to get through, so let"s skip the roll call and i"m gonna dive right in.our goal today is to come to an agreement on a very important proposal. as a group, we need to decide if —bloop bloop — (laughter) hi, who just joined? no? i thought i heard a beep.
sound familiar? yeah, it sounds familiar to me, too. a couple of weeks after i put that online, 500,000 people in dozens of countries, i mean dozens of countries, watched this video. and three years later, it"s still getting thousands of views every month. it"s close to about a million right now. and in fact, some of the biggest companies in the world, companies that you"ve heard of but i won"t name, have asked for my permission to use this video in their new-hire training to teach their new employees how not to run a meeting at their company.
and if the numbers — there are a million views and it"s being used by all these companies —aren"t enough proof that we have a global problem with meetings, there are the many, many thousands of comments posted online after the video went up. thousands of people wrote things like, "omg, that was my day today!" "that was my day every day!" "this is my life."
one guy wrote, "it"s funny because it"s true.eerily, sadly, depressingly true. it made me laugh until i cried. and cried. and i cried some more." (laughter)this poor guy said, "my daily life until retirement or death, sigh." these are real quotes and it"s real sad.
a common theme running through all of these comments online is this fundamental belief that we are powerless to do anything other than go to meetings and suffer through these poorly run meetings and live to meet another day. but the truth is, we"re not powerless at all. in fact, the cure for mas is right here in our hands. it"s right at our fingertips, literally. it"s something that i call ?no mas! (laughter) which, if i remember my high school spanish, means something like, "enough already, make it stop!"
here"s how no mas works. it"s very simple. first of all, the ne_t time you get a meeting invitation that doesn"t have a lot of information in it at all, click the tentative button! it"s okay, you"re allowed, that"s why it"s there. it"s right ne_t to the accept button. or the maybe button, or whatever button is there for you not to accept immediately.
then, get in touch with the person who asked you to the meeting. tell them you"re very e_cited to support their work, ask them what the goal of the meeting is, and tell them you"re interested in learning how you can help them achieve their goal. and if we do this often enough, and we do it respectfully, people might start to be a little bit more thoughtful about the way they put together meeting invitations. and you can make more thoughtful decisions about accepting it. people might actually start sending out agendas.
imagine! or they might not have a conference call with 12 people to talk about a status when they could just do a quick email and get it done with. people just might start to change their behavior because you changed yours. and they just might bring your chair back, too. (laughter) no mas! thank you.

there are many people who think that wealth is better than health. i used tothink so until one day i read a story about howard hughes. he was an americanbillionaire who got anything he wanted. however, in the last twenty years of his life, his health began to deteriorate and he was miserable. he had the best doctors and nurses. however, he could still find no relief. i realized that health is worth all the money in the world. if you have millions of dollars but your health is poor, you will not be able to do what you want to do. so i would like to say don’t hurt yourself trying to make money instead of taking care of your body and be happy with what you do have. health is more important.
so i think heath is very important. people can do nothing if they are always in poor health, let alone happiness. no matter we are rich or not, we can not ignore the importance of health.
today, many people cant be in good health,so,how to keep healthy is very important. ill say something about food and health. more and more people are realizing the importance of good health. but how to keep fit? in my opinion, ahealthy diet is very important for your health. do you know what a healthy diet is? firstly, you should have a balanced diet. you may not like eating vegetables. you think they are not so delicious. but vegetables have a lot of nutrition. they are very good for your health. secondly, you’d better eat regular meals. you need to eat breakfast, lunch, and dinner every day. regular meals throughout the day give you enough energy to carry out your daily activities. never skip breakfast. it is the most important meal of the day. eat bigger meals earlier in the day. dont have a big dinner. thirdly, most of you like eating snacks. they may affect your appetite. besides, too many snacks make you fat.
in a word, if you want to be healthy, you should keep a healthy diet. it is time for us to do something now, i think. that is, we should eat the right kinds of food, and do not eat any of the unhealthy food! let us do it right away to keep health! lets do it instead of talking about it. thats all i want to say to you
